Happy New Month! Happy Month of Love!

How was the last 31 days? Did you achieve your goals? Are your New Year resolutions still plans, or have you started transforming them into actions? No need to answer me; if you answered No to any of the above questions, I have something to help you here. You’re welcome!

Back to our discussion, I am sure you are wondering why this piece is centred around Love; if it makes you feel better, I wonder, too!

I have always avoided the concept of Love, not because I don’t believe in it but because it’s incredibly confusing. There are many things we term as Love that aren’t Love, and there are always things we don’t term as Love but are Love.

Another reason why I always stay away from Love is because I’m not an expert in it, especially the romantic version. Wait before you think I am writing about Love because I’m booed up; I would love to say the kind of Love I am here to talking is more like “kindness”.

What is Love?

Before we jump into saying we deserve ‘Love’, let’s understand the concept.

Love is generated initially from the Indo-European word “leubh”, meaning “to care” or “to desire. Hence, Love means to express desire or care for someone or something with words and actions. When there is Love, caring and desire for the person or object, it is natural.

Love nourishes our spirits, fuels our growth, and empowers us to face challenges. It’s not about perfection; it’s about acceptance, about embracing the beautiful messiness of being human.

Now, the big question is, do you love yourself?

I am sure you just said yes with a big smile, but do you actually love yourself? How often do you choose yourself over others? A few days ago, I was conversing with a friend, and she was bittered about how much she spends on her family members and close relatives, leaving her with little to fend for herself. As responsible as this is, it doesn’t allow her to express Love to herself; I advised her to prioritize her needs over her family, especially when it is not a matter of life and death.

The next day, I stumbled on content on IG that spoke about a lady who denied herself, Love, because her best friend had a massive crush on the guy asking her out. I found that really disturbing as there are people in 2024 who are saying no to something as beautiful as romantic Love because of someone’s crush. This is one of the reasons why I decided to tag this piece as “we all deserve love”. The lady on IG found herself unworthy of Love because someone else wanted what she needed. This might be heroic to others, but to me, it is self-sabotage.

If you feel undeserving, remember that deserving Love isn’t about achievements or accolades. It’s about existing, about simply being. We deserve Love for the laughter we share, the tears we cry, the dreams we chase. We deserve Love for the stumbles and missteps, for the scars that tell our stories.

Looking at this more closely, loving oneself involves doing things that make one happy even if others are not okay with it, especially when it involves self-care, personal development and goal actualization.

End Notes

As we spread Love this February, let’s remember that Love starts from within; you can’t give what you do not have, so love yourself first!

Remember to clap (as many as 50 times), drop a comment, and share this with your loved ones!
