Wake up oh Youth! Learn a skill!

For 21 years now, the international youth day is celebrated on the 12 of August every year. The United Nations has it as one of its international days celebrations, over the years it has spread to almost every part of the world.

On this day, youth are being celebrated globally. Meetings are being held at different levels, talk shows on TV, VOX Pop and other events to celebrate the youth day. During the course of the day, issues concerning them are discussed and possible solutions are render. This day is solely dedicated to youths and their matters globally. It may be the only day youths are remembered or heard but in most cases it makes a difference.

Youths are the nation’s most priced assets, they are young, strong and vibrant. Those in the military defend the country with all their strengths, those that are civilians are dedicating themselves to personal growth and development in order to bring about change in their nation.

You can all agree with me that only few government truly involve the youth positively. The youth are mostly used as tools during election, they serve as thugs, election riggers and agent of terrorism. People that are strong, young and vibrant who can bring fresh positive ideas to government for the growth and development of their nation are been used to destroy their future and the Nation at large.

These young people are technologically inclined, they follow new advancement and see how things are done in advance countries, making it easier for them to bring about the desired development in country if given the right opportunities.

The rate of unemployment in many countries of the world affect the youth the most, they are meant to be in working positions but are denied the right by men and women that should have retired long ago and staying in old people’s home. Imagine a country where 60% of the population are youth but it’s still ruled by the elderly. How can advancement be possible?

As a young person in Nigeria, now is not the time to sit and pray for good leadership, get up and be that leader. Don’t say you don’t have an opportunity, do you have a voter’s card? Have you ever participated in Elections processes? Do you support any youth seeking for political position? Are you focused on growth of the nation or just interested in getting your share of the national cake?

Instead of waiting for the government, as a young person , you should brace yourself and learn a skill, stop depending solely on government or the private sector for employment. You can learn a soft skill or a hand work. Soft skills like Copywriting, Web development, Web design, Content writing among others, are highly sought after in the international freelance market. You can also learn a hand skill like tailoring, cobbling, welding, painting, building among others. These skills will pay you more than white collar jobs in most cases.

Learning a skill puts you in a better position, you will not be available for dirty jobs, political cruelty or religious crisis. So do you prefer to be independent and develop yourself and other Youths or you prefer to used every year for few pieces of cash. Use your head today. Don’t focus on the promises government and elderly people are dashing out today. Make this youth day be the turning point for you. Learn a skill!

As we celebrate international day for the youth, remember these are your strongest days, make full use of them!
