A DAY FOR SUPERHEROES!

The life of everyone is without direction if there are no teachers. Thank you, teachers, for helping us discover our purpose in life.

Earlier today, I opened my Google Chrome page and was welcomed with a cute background that took me back to my primary school days. When I was not progressing academically and was constantly at the bottom of the class, thank God my teachers didn’t give up on me.

I can never forget Miss Comfort; she was the first person ever to ask me a question in class, appoint me to participate in the school dance (even though I sucked at it), or give me a speech to present on speech and prize giving day.

Annually, 5 October is set aside to celebrate the real heroes of our societies: Teachers!

Someone has taught every educated human; whether formally or informally, a teacher is present. Teachers play an essential role in shaping the future; they are the guiding lights who impart knowledge, instil values, and nurture the potential within students. Teachers show remarkable resilience and adaptability in a traditional classroom or through virtual platforms.

I call teachers superheroes because they always show up regardless of what is happening in their lives. Globally, teaching is one of the most underpaid professions in almost every country but is still one of the oldest professions. These teachers are focused more on the impact they have on the lives of others than what they get in return.

This year’s celebration is centred on the theme — “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”. The theme conveys this year’s aim to find solutions to restrict the decline of teachers and increase the number significantly by resolving retention issues and providing educators with the right motivation.

In most developing countries, it is rare to see a young person applying to study education at higher institutions, even those who studied education dire away from teaching. The government and those in authority must enhance the welfare of teachers and make the profession more attractive with opportunities for growth and development.

On this World Teachers Day, each of us needs to pay our due respect to our teachers. Let us bring back the glory of being a teacher by making this world a better place for teachers, as they have done the same for us! They deserve all the recognition and applause for all their contributions towards improving the educational system.

A small token or message of gratitude goes a long way. Let us all celebrate the unsung heroes who have shaped many futures!

I want to thank all my Home, School and Church teachers today. You all shaped me into the amazing woman I am today.

My special appreciation goes to Mrs. Amos (my mum), my first teacher (last year I wrote about my learning experience with her here), Miss. Comfort, my primary two teacher, who gave me a chance when no one did, and Mr Ibrahim, who didn't allow me to quit school in primary one, all hold a special place in my heart!

Are you a teacher? You are a superhero; wear that badge with pride!!!
